Scuba Diving
There have been many scuba diving weddings, in wet suites with written cards to having dry-suits being miked up to broadcast or be recorded
This can be done here, no problem
The thing we are offering is a new and novel place to do it and there are many places to choose from
For your honeymoon you can continue Diving from your charterd yacht
Diving in the Greek Mediterranean Sea was not allowed until 2004
Now there are sites opening up all round Greece
Sea Areas for Underwater Activities (SCUBA Diving) around Attica are: -
- At the second port of Vouliagmeni
- At Varkiza bay at a distance of 100 m. from the small island Artemis
- Along the coast from Kavouri to Legrena
New places are opening up all the time
When you have chosen a place you want to dive, you can always ask the local Port Authority if it is allowed and get premission
(They may have newer lists at http://www.finswimming.org.gr/ , but I can not guarantee it as their site was down at the time of writing this article)
The Greek Federation of Submarine Activity - Sports Fishing and Technical Swimming are in charge of policing the preservation of the archaeological sites and artefacts

This means that there are some laws to follow
- You can dive from Dawn to Dusk with underwater breathing apparatus
- Diving is only allowed for educational purposes only
- Sorry, photographing of antiquities is forbidden, so is the removal or bringing something up to look at it
- Any discovery of antiquities should be immediately reported to the local Archaeological Service or Port Authority or Police Authority
- The use of special equipment for the search and localization of antiquities as well as the existence of such equipment on the boats (yachts, sailing boats etc.) is against the law
- The use of your tanks for underwater fishing is also against the law
- No scientific or professional work at the bottom of the sea is to be carried out without the previous consent of the Ministry of Culture or the competent Authorities
- All divers should conform to the above restrictions and respect the provisions of the Law 5351/32 on antiquities

Coming soon

Now things are loosening up and you may be able to take underwater photographs or cinematography, this requires the permission of the local Port Authorities, which is granted after the concurrence of the competent Underwater Archaeological Findings Inspection dept. of the Ministry for Culture, ask them and they will tell you if the Ministry has OK’d your proposed dive site as active
Of course if you just want to Snorkel, you do not have all these problems of where you can do it, but the legal restrictions on antiques still applies
Just snorkelling means you can not go down deep in to those nice clear waters, but it is very popular
Although their is no Hellenic Federation for Scuba Diving, there are:-
Hellenic Federation for underwater Activities Sports-fishing & Fin-swimming covers it here
Or
Hellenic Federation of Underwater Activity and Technical Swimming - site is in Greek only
These sites will give you names of good licensed Diving Schools
