Bikes
When you come to Greece you will notice that there are a lot of Bikes on the road
Motor Bikes, Track Bikes and Mopeds
Many villages and islands will rent bikes, Mopeds are cheap, not very good looking and easy to repair
Motor Bikes are a bit more expensive
Track bikes are great for the countryside
Next you notice that people do not wear protection, the rider carries their helmet whilst many pillions do not wear one, and many ride around in shorts, tea shirts and flip-flops.
The bikes are very loud, many of them have removed the bafflers, this makes it more economical fuel wise but loud – track bike never have baffles
Please note, the rental agencies do provide all safety equipment and take no responsibility for any accident if you choose not to use it
So far I do not think I have put anyone off coming here and hitting the open road

They do like groups of bikers coming and enjoying themselves, but they come down on bad behaviour like a ton of bricks
They will stop you to check you have the licence and insurance, that you are not too drunk to drive or if you are making to much noise in a residential area with partying
But the rest is up to you

Of course the EU rules and regs. are coming into force here like the rest of Europe
At the moment they are still allowing freedom of the Person V the rules of the State
But you do not want to be in hospital
Look for special helmets that allow more wind and air in than the usual, rather like bicycle helmets, knee and elbow pads and wear leather trainers
Do not forget water, sunscreen, antihistamines, be careful of sunstroke, it may seem cool in the wind made as you go, but it is hot, dehydrating and dangerous
A little precaution goes a long way – get insurance for biking |
