They have a lot of open space here, farms and protected land and of course lots of coast line
They do not want people just parking themselves anywhere in the good weather, starting up campfires and using the bushes as toilets
So camping in any form outside of the authorised camping sites is not allowed, they will arrest you
Registered, legal camp sites operate under a Greek National Tourism Organization licence number
Now we come to the tricky bit, lots of Greeks have land by the sea, they may have put in water, drainage and other things to make it home, but that is the point, it is their home property
It does not make it a camping site
If your friends have a place you can stay on, and they will vouch for you to the police, that is OK
There are no ‘parking spots’ where you can just pull up for the night like in the rest of Europe
In fact, a mobile home or caravan are classified as a ‘luxury item’, like a yacht, here in Greece so you rarely see a Greek owning one, maybe an old caravan but not a mobile home
Old caravans are used often by families as cheap temporary accommodation on farm land, used as farm head quarters during harvesting time
What does this mean for you?
It means that there are lots of camping sites, in the mountains and by the sea
They are modern and surprisingly up to date with facilities and amenities
They are professional, they have all the electric, sanitary and entertainment services you find in any other European campsite
Though not all are on the internet with their own sites, they are listed on the internet with many camping sites
