Transport
Transport is an important part of any holiday, for an Event it is paramount.
Here in Attica they have lots of good roads, in Athens they have good public transport, busses, trams, trolleys, metro, trains and of course taxis
Villages do not usually have public transport, they have Taxis and the local coach, these are the busses that run from Athens to major towns, stopping along the way at the smaller villages
They have trains running from the Peloponnesus to Athens and from Athens to Thessalonica
They have small reasonably priced planes that fly from Athens to Thessalonica and all islands and mainland airports.
From Athens you can take many forms of commercial water transport, ferries, flying Dolphins and hover craft to mainland and island ports, some of these ports seam like jetties, do not be fooled, they do know what they are doing.
Most of these smaller ports have lots of yachts and fishing boats, there is a large industry and leisure industry in Greece where sea faring transport is involved
You can rent many forms of smaller boats, vehicles, planes and other craft for pleasure, it is all here! |
In the summer, starting about April, they have little land trains that take you round the central part of Athens, sightseeing, around the Acropolis, through Plaka, Monisiriki, the old Olympic Stadium and through the Palace Gardens
There are leaflets in the tourist office in Syntagma showing the routs or you can use the tip box to see them
The local transport routes for Athens are too cumbersome to have on the site, so I have given you a link in the side bar to the public transport sites, they are in Greek and English
Busses in villages are really the coaches that run from Athens to major towns, stopping along the way at villages, some times these stops are on the main road, which may mean you have a ways to walk to the village
The local ticket office is normally in the village but often you can stand on the side of the major road, wave the buss down and pay when you get on, these coaches run every hour or two, but not late at night
If one goes by you, do not worry, they have certain pickup and put down stopping areas along their journey, if it stops to pick you up it will stop to put you down
